Furnish me with tips to cope.

I've gone from 20 a day to fuck all (since the 1st) and I'm feeling a tiny bit murdery.

Agent Scud.

Giving up smoking is really difficult. I tried on a number of occasions and the irritability and longing for nicotine just took me over, and back I went, a slave to British Tobacco.

The medical evidence supporting the ill effects of smoking, lung cancer etc etc is very compelling and it was this that eventually persuaded me to stop smoking. Check out the facts, the supporting evidence and the horrific photos on a number of websites that are in support of the anti smoking levy will help you give up smoking for good.

All the best mate.

Ive been on a vape thingy since march. Not had a single.smoke.
Cut nicotine from 2.4 to 0.8mg and feel great. It still has nicotine but none of the other nasty shit in it. Working for me hope to be off these or down to zero by summer.. Keep at it.

Re: Stopping Smoking
havent had anything since mid november, was on the vapes and on the fags when drunk.

Don't bother with the vapes, just stop.

Also if you like a DRINK make sure you have a session within a week of packing of fags, once you get through 1/2 boozy nights and you don't smoke there is really no reason too smoke.

I wanted to kill someone for the first 2 weeks, road rage was out of control.

Banjo,

Cheers. Tried pretty much everything over the last 6-7 years but always relapse after about 5-6 months.

I'm hoping that this one sticks as most friends have now given up, there's only three of us left and work smoking and Mrs Scud is trying to quit too.

Getting through the trigger points is the main strain. Not looking forward to driving to the airport this afternoon as travelling was always broken down by smoke points (on the drive, at the airport and on the train the other end).

Anyone getting in my way at Gatwick this evening might get an earful.

Re: Stopping Smoking
I gave up when our boy came along. I gave up for all the good reasons that Banjo has mentioned. I had been smoking 20-40 for around 20 years. As each day went past I would get angry with myself for having the craving and knowing that if I started again I would 'sacrifice' all of that hard work.

Now start to think of the benefits. Worries about how it is effecting your health play on your mind - that goes away, you start to feel better and are less short of breath. You and your cloths no longer stink ( people who smoke really don't understand just how bad they smell) .

Good luck Scud, keep at it, you won't be sorry.

Re: Stopping Smoking
I devised my own plan and it took about 3-6 mths.

Stage 1: stop smoking at work/morning. So at midnight the night before you stop. Then dont smoke all day. However from 5:30 until midnight...puff away. Try this for a couple of mths.

Stage 2: stop smoking in the week. So no fags from midnight sunday to 5:30 fri afternoon. Try this for a couple of mths. Slowly but surely you'll start smoking less.

Stage 3: try 1 weekend with none. Then by the next weekend, if you have followed stages 1 and 2, youve done nearly 2 weeks. Why stop there? Soon it will be 3 weeks, then 4. Before you know it you'll be 3 mths down.

Its about reducing the number slowly. Good luck. Its the hardest thing i have ever done and ive done 9 yrs now.

1 negative, and this is because its not worth lying, the graving will never go away. It weakens greatly, but it never goes completely. You just need to think of the positives. Ie saving ££ and your health.

I think they were about £5.20 a pack when i gave up. How people can afford 20 a day now is beyond me!

Re: Stopping Smoking
I suppose it's different for everybody. I gave up in one go, dragging it out like Penners I would have struggled with. I also have to say that I really stopped craving after a few months. The thought of smoking now is nauseating.

Re: Stopping Smoking
Me too strong dreams. There was only ever one way that worked. Pack it in and mean it.

If you don't really mean it then you fail. When I was in my early 20's after starting smoking at 14, I wanted to get back to playing football. I found that my stamina was affected by smoking and the tightness across the chest was painful. I had no trouble giving up....

I think it's horses for courses, some find it hard to stop, others don't. Bloke I know here gave up around 2 months ago and said it was easy and doesn't miss it a bit, but I suppose he could fall off the wagon..

Best of luck, Scud.

Study all the health risks of smoking and be so disturbed you will not light up another fag for ever.

Re: Stopping Smoking
Just stopping is like a jolt to the system. So you feel like crap as you go cold turkey. Couldnt give a fuck how gay it was. The method i used worked fine.

Its like a diet really. These faddy 5:2 ones work in the short term, but if you want it to stay off you need a long term plan.

Re: Stopping Smoking
What HERMIT said. I got involved with Alan Carr, but i watched the DVD.

It's not some miracle cure, but what it does do is present you with the reasons you should stop smoking and they stay with you every time you fancy lighting one up.

The only one i didn't agree with was when it basically says "your friends are inside but you're outside in the cold, smoking, shivering like a loser" when in fact everyone knows smoking areas are the coolest places to be. But everything else, just sticks with you.

One thing i will say though, is that i don't think you ever "quit" smoking. You just learn to control it until you just stop for good.

Good luck mate!

Re: Stopping Smoking
Also, just saw what Davenport said...

That's actually pretty good advice. I did the opposite, i gave up drinking for a month because i knew a beer would make me light up again right away, but if you can drink and not smoke, you've got it down.

Also, set yourself mini targets. Go for 3 days (which is what "they" say is the point which you get past the nicotine addiction.) Then go for a week. Then a month, etc.

Re: Stopping Smoking
I was a heavy smoker from 14 until around 33.

I was the master of giving up for 6 to 10 weeks and then relapsing. I probably did that about 10 times.

In 2003 took up running, hard as fuck at first but the thought of smoking now baffles me.

In my experience you have to find something else to replace the addiction.

Good luck.

Re: Stopping Smoking
I went cold turkey, the only problem would be maintaining my willpower when out drinking, so i gave up drinking as well,l not had alcohol or cigs for 12 years now, next stage looking to go in a monastery.
For those who want to give up there is a load of help out there.
When i gave up 15 layers of skin came off the roof of my mouth I had pains in the chest all a reaction to giving up.
Good Luck!!
